On August 18, 1937, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, President of the United States, was a guest of Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan at their cottage in Nags Head, having journeyed to the Outer Banks to attend the showing of the outdoor play, The Lost Colony.
On August 19, 1977, the Toms-Buchanan Cottage was entered on The National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior. The Buchanan Cottage is one of the famous homes known as the "Unpainted Aristocracy" in Nags Head, North Carolina.
